Our dentists have placed countless crowns in young patients over the years. Crowns are an excellent way to save teeth that can’t hold a filling, or teeth that have gone through a root canal. Crowns can be expensive, but parents are often pleasantly surprised at our fees! We work the best with each patient’s situation to provide the most affordable and high-quality dental treatment possible.
What to Know About Crowns
Most of the time, a filling is a great choice for a tooth that has decay or damage. But sometimes, if this tooth is severely damaged or can’t hold a filling, one of our dentists may recommend that your child gets a crown. This is a type of dental restoration that completely covers the tooth surface. Once your child gets a crown, it’s almost like getting a whole new tooth since crowns are extremely strong and durable.
At Kidz Choice Dental, we offer both metal and porcelain crowns. Both types are quite strong, but porcelain has the advantage of looking more like a real tooth. So if your child needs a crown on a tooth that is visible when he or she smiles, porcelain might be a better option.
The Procedure Involved in Getting a Crown
Your child will have to visit our office twice to get a new crown. During the first visit, the dentist will remove any existing decay from the affected tooth. Then, the dentist will make an impression of your child’s tooth. It is from this impression that his or her final crown will be made. Before your child leaves the office, we’ll fit him or her with a temporary crown to wear until the permanent one is ready.
During the second visit, the dentist will remove the temporary crown and fit your child with the brand new permanent crown. Although the time varies to a certain extent, you’ll probably have to wait one to two weeks for the permanent crown to be created. But the results are well worth it since it will be just like getting a brand new tooth for your child!
